Halo is a science fiction first-person shooter game franchise created by Bungie and published by Microsoft Studios. The series centers on an interstellar war between humanity and an alliance of aliens known as the Covenant.
The current competitive Halo game is Halo 5: Guardians, a first-person shooter developed by 343 Industries, a subsidiary of Microsoft Studios. It is the direct sequel to Halo 4 and it replaced Halo 2 Anniversary as the main competitive game of the series.
New contender for the eSports crown
In response to the dominance of Activision's Call of Duty series in the console eSports market, Microsoft announced the Halo World Championship with $1 million prize pool. Even prior to Halo 5: Guardians' release, Microsoft put a lot of focus on developing the game with eSports in mind. A portion of the proceeds from in-game items bought with real currency contributes to prize pools. By November 4 crowdfunding has added US$500,000 to the pool, which climbed to US$700,000 by November 19. By February 19, the total prize pool exceeded US$2,500,000. The Halo World Championship began on December 6, 2015, with the finals running March 18–20, 2016.
After the Halo World Championship, Microsoft announced the start of the Halo Pro League in partnership with ESL as a way to grow Halo eSports.
